Available in plain finish, or with the ‘bright cut’ fern detail, this particular piece can generally be found once or twice a month in online auction sites. It is listed as a ‘spooner’ . When laying out the table for a meal, a spoon would not necessarily have been placed on the table. A knife and fork were the most necessary of implements and so it was ‘the style’ to place spoons in containers on the table should they be needed.
Small vases or ‘posey holders’ were apparently very popular in Victorian America. On this page, we present several charming examples of vases. Some of these vases might also have done double duty as ‘spooners’. It was the fashion of the time to have your best spoons stored and presented in a bowl on the table. https://youtu.be/984Jaf1sibA
